Pit Firing Workshop - February 2026

Miki Shim returns to the Bay Area for a Pit Fire workshop! Participants will learn the best practices for making, trimming, burnishing, firing the wares in the camp fire rings at the beach and discuss finishing options for after the firing.

We will meet in the studio for three days for making, and then meet on the beach for the firing.Hand built wares and wheel works are both welcomed. Some clay experience is required to keep pace with this workshop.

Participants will receive a half bag of B-Mix and a half bag of Red Velvet for the class. Additional clay is available for purchase. All firing materials and supplies are included in the workshop fee.

Saturday, January 31st (2:00PM-6:00PM) - Hand Building Vessels, Trimming

Sunday, February 1st (2:00PM-6:00PM) - Trimming, Burnishing

Saturday, February 7th* (8:00AM-5:00PM) - Pit Firing at Pine Tree State Park in Santa Cruz

*If there is poor weather on Saturday, February 7th, firing will be moved to Sunday, February 8th

Class Policies

  • Class fees for this workshop covers instructed class time, use of tools and equipment, a half bag of BMix, a half bag of Red Velvet, firing supplies and materials.

  • To cancel this workshop, please email us and request cancellation. The cancellation request must be received 1 month prior to class start. If the cancellation request is received 1 month prior to the start of the class, a refund (minus $20 processing fee) will be granted. We are unable to accommodate cancellation requests received less than 1 month prior to class start unless a replacement can be found.

  • No make up classes are available if you miss a session.

  • Any items left behind 15 days after the final class meeting may be discarded. Reasonable attempts will be made to contact you for pickup prior to staff discarding said items.

  • As this is a specialty workshop, no open studio hours are included.

  • Classes are subject to change if the minimum student quota isn't met (6 students).
